Barcelona Bids Farewell to Xavi and Defeats Sevilla
Barcelona bid farewell to their coach Xavi Hernandez with a morale-boosting 2-1 victory over hosts Sevilla on Sunday evening, in the final match of the 38th round of the Spanish La Liga.
The Catalan team took the lead after 16 minutes when João Cancelo delivered a cross that Robert Lewandowski met with his foot to score his 19th goal of the season in the competition.
Sevilla equalized in the 31st minute with a goal by Youssef En-Nesyri, who shot the ball between goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen’s legs, marking the Moroccan striker’s 16th goal of the season.
In the second half, Fermín López scored Barcelona’s second goal in the 59th minute, raising Barcelona’s total to 85 points, placing them second in the league, ten points behind the champions, Real Madrid.
Sevilla’s points tally remained at 41 after their fourth consecutive loss, placing them in 14th position.
The Catalan club announced the dismissal of Xavi Hernandez after two and a half seasons with the team, during which he won the La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup in 2023, but Barcelona failed to secure any titles this season.
There are strong rumors that Barcelona’s management is considering appointing Hansi Flick, the former head coach of the German national team and Bayern Munich.
