The dismissal of Xavi and the hiring of Flick… Behind the scenes of Laporta’s anger towards the former Barcelona captain.
The future of Barcelona’s coach and former captain Xavi Hernandez is shrouded in uncertainty, as talks of an upcoming meeting between him and the club’s president, Joan Laporta, circulate to determine his fate amidst rumors of a meeting with the German Hansi Flick, his expected successor at Camp Nou.
Several reports have mentioned that Laporta is angry about Xavi’s comments regarding the inability to compete with Real Madrid. Therefore, he will meet with him personally to inform him of the dismissal decision.
Xavi ignited Laporta’s anger during the press conference before the match against Almeria when he criticized the club’s difficult economic situation and pointed out the challenges of competing with Real Madrid and other European clubs.
According to the newspaper “Marca,” Laporta’s explicit anger towards Xavi and his insistence on dismissing him next week (which was leaked by his entourage but has not yet been confirmed) is causing confusion and uncertainty at all levels of the Catalan club.
According to the newspaper, a meeting will be held next week at the latest, after the final round of La Liga against Sevilla. The meeting will include Xavi, Laporta, sporting director Deco, vice president Rafa Yuste, and possibly board member Alejandro Echevarria.
The newspaper noted that Laporta is still determined to dismiss him, but nothing is certain due to the compensation that must be paid to him, the support the coach enjoys, and the lack of consensus among close associates regarding what is best for Barcelona’s future project.
Xavi’s successor
Meanwhile, the newspaper “Sport” revealed on Wednesday that Deco and his deputy Bojan Krkic were in London to meet with the German coach Flick, one of President Laporta’s preferred candidates to succeed Xavi. However, Flick’s associates denied the circulating information.
Club sources confirmed to Marca that the main purpose of the trip was to watch the Europa League final between Bayer Leverkusen and Atalanta in Dublin, but they did not have direct flights and had to stop in London.
What fuels the rumors further is that Flick did not accept the offer made to him by Chelsea, and he has frozen all negotiations through his agent with all clubs interested in hiring him.
The German coach has been waiting for a call from Barcelona for a while, especially after Xavi announced his departure from the team and then reversed his decision.
Flick has an impressive record of success during his short tenure with Bayern Munich (from 2019 to 2021), where he won two league titles, the cup, the super cup, the UEFA Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup.
