The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) confirmed that the pink card will appear for the first time in the 2024 Copa America, which will be held in June next year in the United States.

The Spanish newspaper “Marca” reported that the pink card will be used to notify the referee or the fourth official of a potential substitution due to suspected head injury or concussion.

The report continued: “When a concussion substitution is used, the opposing team will automatically have the possibility to make an additional substitution.”

The Competitions and Operations Directorate of the Confederation announced that a potential sixth (or seventh) substitution will be added to prioritize player health.

The Spanish newspaper “AS” clarified that “this substitution can only be made once per team in addition to the five substitutions that can be made during the 90 minutes (or six in case of extra time).”

It added: “The player who is substituted cannot return to the field and will go to the locker room, and if necessary, to a medical center.”

The Copa America will begin on June 20 and will end on July 14.
